Happy New Year, time to get planning!!!!

I admit that there is an uneventful feeling that comes over me once I remove all the holiday decorations and see my space in its bare bones state. This is a perfect time to take a good look at your space and start your “wish list” of home improvement projects.

You need a wish list as a place to start, as a guide, then develop an investment range and due date for these projects before you jump in with both feet. With the winter duldroms upon us, it is the perfect time to make some time to plan. Get those home décor magazines and tear out pages or spaces that you like. If you are thinking about a kitchen, bathroom or larger project then it is also time to begin the process of planning the overall look and feel of the renovated space.

If this sounds overwhelming to you now, then starting with a slightly smaller project may be a better solution for you. Developing an overall color scheme for your space is a great place to begin. This will allow you to complete “small spruce ups” and accessorizing on your own, but with direction, prior to getting in to that larger project. The direction comes from someone like me.

At Jerry’s Paint on Backlick Road in Springfield 703-569-2622, I offer complimentary ½ hour consultations on Thursday afternoons and the 3^rd Saturday afternoon of the month for color selection (this generally will cover a few rooms of color). Please be prepared for our time together by bringing digital photos of the space that you want to select the color for and the adjacent spaces also. The other key element is fabric swatches or good photos of rugs or fabrics that will be staying in the space and we need to work around. If this is not enough time for your project, I am also available for outside consultations (for an additional charge) at your home.

If you are thinking of starting a larger project, now is the time to hire a professional that can help you plan properly and making the right decisions along the way end up making the project move along much more smoothly and successfully.

There is not much to show after day two, sorry. The guys finished up the electrical in both spaces. They also had a long day of patching and mudding drywall. The bathroom looks so much larger without the wall seperating the vanity from the shower area!!!! Weds will be an exciting day since they are working on setting the cabinets (at least that is the plan that I know). There will be photos to share later.

The bathroom demolition was a little more tricky. All the plumbing had to be temporary capped off and they had to inspect for damage to the floors. (thank goodness there was none) That was not in the budget....... With the vanity torn out and the countertop and medicine cabinet gone, it was on to removing the old flooring (it was only two layers......that was a treat). Then it was time to remove the wall that seperated the vanity area from the water closet and shower area. That automatically gave us another 6-7 inches of space in this bathroom. That is great for this growing family.

Day 1 in Marie's kitchen went pretty well. The demo was relatively quick work, they were done by noon time. Then they got to work running the wires for the new electrical (undercabinet lights, recessed lights and new outlets for the desk area). They will be doing electrical for most of the day tomorrow too. As before, there is Ross, Troy and John.

Guest room re-design in McLean

The client is having company visit later this week. The guest room was pretty bare and the bed was pushed up under a set of 2 windows. We moved the bed and bedside table to the right hand wall and that made a cozy little nook for the guests. We purchased art and hung it in an interesting arrangement. We added a small accent chair, floor lamp and some accessories and any guest would be comfortable in this room for a visit!!!!

Bedroom Redesigns

Well the client wanted a more pulled together look in her MBR. I loved the rug and used that as the inspiration for the overall colors in the room. The first photos (at the top) are the after shots, the lower photos are the before.
We moved the furniture all around so that it would make a statement in the room. We added a leather accent chair, with a complimentary throw. We purchased new art and accessories for the room and what a difference a day made. The client was thrilled (to say the least)

The guys are test fitting the small cut tiles near the window sill. Oops, that one is too large. Back to the tile saw to trim it down a little.
The pattern is looking great. It gives a lot of interest without being terribly busy.
The amber accent tile picks up the color in the "accent" glaze in the cabinets.

Ross is carefully planning the first few tiles.
We want to make sure that there is a full tile at the wall edge. One row on the straight, accent glass tile then the rest in the 45 degree up to the cabinets.

And there it is.......New Venetian Gold with a half bullnose edge.

Stay tuned, Tuesday will be a busy day of finishing up all the small details that the guys can. Set the tile backsplash, install the last few pieces of trim, level the cabinet doors. Then we just have to wait for a couple of replacement doors from the cabinet company to be able to finish completely.

Granite at Edy and Jim's

The techs want to be sure that the granite fits perfectly to the wall. That would be a YES!!! Then they will drill for the faucet and soap dispenser.

There is not much action in the kitchen this week. The guys are waiting for the granite to be installed on Monday. Then they will get going on the tile backsplash and the finishing work.

The refridge and stove are back in place now (at least until the granite is installed). The finished end doors look great on the tall pantry also.

The new 3 1/4" solid cherry floors are being laid also. Remember that they will darken (or amber) over time so don't worry that they are too light.

We are also adding under cabinet lighting (on a dimmer of course) to enhance the visibility on the work surfaces.

Wow this was a very exciting and productive morning.
The flooring was delivered so it can acclimate for 72 hours.
The cabinetry was also delivered and we spent some time putting the puzzle pieces together.
(or so I say........a couple of phone calls to Cindy and we were all set)
Most of the cabinets are unpacked and some are being placed this afternoon.
The guys will be setting cabinets the rest of the day today, tomorrow and Friday.

The guys were busy at work all day working on the new recessed lighting and moving some electrical outlets. There was a lot of patching the ceiling and dry wall mud. New lighting very soon.

The guys (you'll meet them tomorrow are John, Ross and Troy) arrived at the job site just around 9am and we reviewed the plans and the details.
They made great progress with the demolition during the day today and we were able to save the old cabinets and countertops for the clients to donate to "Project Mend-A-House". www.pmahweb.org That is our way of going "green" with this renovation.
I will have photos tomorrow for you to see and more updates as the project moves along.

We also selected natural American cherry for the floors. That will be so warm and inviting with the glaze accented cream cabinets. More next week!!!!!

These are the items that we have selected for the new kitchen.
New full overlay door cabinets. Full extension drawer glides (wow they can use those back 3 inches in every drawer). Floor to ceiling pantry cabinets, 12 " deep.
Brushed nickel hardware, classic colonial style. Glazed ceramic tile with amber glass accent tile.

I am glad to have you visit!!!
I hope that you will follow along to see the progress in this kitchen remodel.
This will be pretty close to real time and I will post photos regularly of the work happening on the job site. I will relate the trials and tribulations of the work as we go along.
